Julia Updegraff is a young photographer who is currently contributing to the strong voice of women in art. Her work seems to perfectly juxtapose candid youthfulness and calculated scenes.
Tell me about yourself!
I’m 18 and I am majoring in photography at SCAD in Savannah, Georgia
What are some of your influences?
My biggest influences are my Instagram feed and the music scene and the people who are scared of art and inanimate objects.
I am also into the re-emergence of film as a medium for young artists. Do you think we are becoming nostalgic for the times before it was so easy for a person to just snap a photo and share it?
I think a lot of people like to shoot film for the vintage look of it, but I shoot film because of the tangibility. What you captured now exists outside of the digital world and feels more real. I am by no means against digital photography it just doesn’t have the same feeling and excitement as film.
What kinds of goals and plans do you have for the future?
Traveling and working with photographers/models in other cities. Making clothes & zines and selling them on the internet for fun. Putting out content and working hard in school. School is definitely my main focus right now
If you could shoot anyone, who would you choose?
